On Boxing Day here in Aus the best news coverage was when SBS TV switched over to the BBC news. I can't recall whether it was 24 or World but it was a refreshing change from the shoddy excuse for news programmes that we get here. SBS and ABC (roughly equivalent to C4 and BBC 1) do a reasonable job given their financial constraints but the three commercial terrestrial channels are dreadful. Hardly a story is covered unless there is an Aussie angle, no matter how tenous that link may be.
Oddly enough one of the most impressive moments in the BBC coverage was when the newsreader apologised for not having time to check the pronunciation of some of the locations. The commercial news outlets here seem to hire people that have enough trouble with English pronunciations when it's their first language.
For all its faults and limitations the Beeb is still the best at what it does.
