gavin, of course they should have waited until they could see the whites of their eyes.
Remember the time John Simpson's crew took friendly fire and his translator was killed? Can you imagine him ranting and raving in this manner?
Of course John Simpson is British to the core, and this Sgrena person is a highly strung Italian. Not to mention a self-declared "enemy of the Americans", her words.
Gavin I feel you're misinterpreting what those shots were aimed to do. "Levelling your weapon and taking out two passengers with one shot" is clearly not what the intention of the solider was, he was aiming to hit the engine block and disable the vehicle. It appears one shot was marginally high and entered the cabin.
Don't you think you should check your facts before regurgitating the Eason Jordan rubbish ? Rubbish that ended his carrer at CNN.
If the US had truly wanted to kill the journalist, surely they would have done so.
The simpler answer is that the car was stupidly speeding towards a checkpoint - on what is reckoned to be the most dangerous road in Baghdad for terrorist attacks including car bombs. The mericans were not warned that the car was coming. The journalist herself has said the car nearly went out of control earlier, going too fast in the wet. She claims there was a "hail" of bullets - suggesting some 300 to 300. But the photos of the car in the italian newspapers show one maybe two bullet marks in the lower windscreen - and one on a wheel. Just look at the photos ! No wy would trained infantrymen fire hundreds of shots with so few hits.
No - you (and the BBC) would rather give credence to the journalist's claims - a journalist for a communist paper who stated she hated the Americans and sided with the terrorists even as arrived in Iraq. Claims that increasingly look like lies.

And bear in mind that the large hostage ransom will buy more car bombs, will probably kill many more innocent Iraqis.
If troops were really targeting journalists they screwed up big time.
The Italian is not a "journalist". She's a commie hack. Oh hang on a minute, my mistake - that makes you a "journalist" to the Institionally Leftists at the BBC, Al-Reuters, The Disassociated Press, NY Slimes, Washington Compost, et al.
